IVF for free clinical trials UK
IVF treatment has been successfully helping couples in the UK since 1978 and in the US since 1981. Although the method was initially opposed by certain groups based on safety and moral concerns, IVF treatment is more accepted today as a viable and safe procedure for couples that have tried all of the other means of conceiving naturally. Fertility centers are all over the UK and the NHS fund IVF treatment.
Is IVF Treatment Free on the NHS?
Private IVF treatment cost can be anything from £4000 upwards when the cost of consultation and medication is included. When comparing IVF treatment cost, it would be wise to factor in possible extra costs for drugs, consultations and additional procedures that may be required. IVF treatment is free on the NHS however, not all applicants can receive IVF treatment free on the NHS. IVF treatment funded for free on the NHS is done so within certain guidelines set out by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence or NICE.
What are the Nice Guidelines?
Whether or not patients are offered IVF treatment free on the NHS is affected by NICE guidelines which propose that those patients between 23 and 39 years of age should receive IVF treatment funded free on the NHS if one or both partners have been diagnosed with a fertility problem or both have been infertile for three years. In addition to these guidelines, there may also be guidelines specific to different primary care trusts. This means that free IVF treatment on the NHS can become a post code lottery.
How Can I Get Free IVF on the NHS?
Some primary care trusts will not give free IVF treatment to couples in which one partner has a child. If a couple has been trying to conceive a child for over a year it may mean that they are eligible for free IVF treatment. As each primary care trust can differ in terms of the guidelines affecting the provision of IVF treatment free on the NHS, it is advisable to discuss the options and possibility with a GP.
Are There Any Negatives of Receiving Free IVF Treatment on the NHS?
NHS waiting lists for free IVF treatment is also PCT (primary health trust) specific. Waiting lists can be long and there are many other medical and health emergencies waiting for treatment. In addition, if patients are not exempt from paying for medication, there is still the cost of drugs to pay for.
