Oxford Respiratory Clinical Trials Unit

Our aim is to work with doctors across the country to improve the care of patients with respiratory diseases and the quality and quantity of respiratory research in the UK. In this way,we hope to improve the quality of life of the millions of people throughout the world who suffer from respiratory disease.

The ORTU has a special interest in both pleural malignancy and pleural infection. About 300, 000 patients need treatment for malignant pleural effusion per year in the UK and USA. These patients suffer breathlessness and decreased quality of life. Improving these symptoms is the major focus of our work within this area. We are currently conducting three clinical trials in patients with malignant pleural disease.

The current work of the sleep unit centres on the cardiovascular complications of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea,a common respiratory problem affecting 2-4% and 1-2% of middle aged males and females respectively. Mild disease has prevalence up to 24%. The association between OSA and cardiovascular disease is not fully understood.

The MOSAIC (Multi-centre Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Interventional Cardiovascular) trial was recently completed and addressed the effect that continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy has on markers of cardiovascular disease in patients with mild obstructive sleep apnoea,and is in the publication phase.

The department has research interests in altitude medicine,chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD),pulmonary vascular responses to hypoxia and obesity hypoventilation. We are recruiting to a cohort of patients with COPD with careful phenotyping and genotyping of over 1000 patients,with the aim of establishing a large longitudinal cohort. Specific studies in a subset of this cohort of patients will be used to investigate novel functional imaging techniques in the lung,in collaboration with Professor Fergus Gleeson.
